Paintings from the class at Columbus Oh.

I took few painting classes with a local artist named Jim Glover during my stay at Columbus. I am glad I took the classes though it was for a very short time.

The following 3 paintings were completed during the class.

Still Life

9X12 Oil on Canvas

This is the first time I ever completed a still life. The paintings were completed in 1 hour. I was a bit hesitant to go for a still life but I am glad I did it. I never completed a painting in one sitting. This is something I want to learn so that I can do a small study for bigger paintings.

Baby Elephant Hiding from the Sun

9x12 Oil on Canvas

I would not call this my painting as most of the final stores were by the instructor showing me how to change the vegetation colour so that the elephant stands out. My greens were competing with the elephants. I will to try this on a bigger canvas in short time.

When I saw this photograph I wanted to do a painting which reflects the togetherness of a family during difficult times.

I am not sure if I have conveyed the message but I loved the finished painting.

Animal Family 1

This is one of the 4 paintings I am keeping the Feb 2010 show. This is an Oil painting on a 18X24 cotton canvas board. Most of the painting was done with a palette knife. It is very tough to make my mother like a painting, luckily she loved this one.

Looking forward for the feedback from the show.

I was working on the last 4 paintings for a group show in Bangalore. I was looking forward to it as the show was in a different state and it would have given me an opportunity to meet other experienced artists. Unfortunately my husband's trip got postponed. I could not mail the paintings as it was getting very expensive. So I decided to keep my animal series paintings, which I completed last year in India. I will post the series soon.

Shades of the Sky

This painting gave me a tough time as I was running against time and I do not have much idea that red and yellow take long time to dry. I worked on the second layer before the first one was completely dry so lifted some some paint from the first layer, so had to wait for a week to make corrections. I used liquin sometimes for faster drying which made the painting glossy in few places and I had no clue why. Luckily in my class I was told not to worry about it, all I need to do is apply varnish after a month and the whole painting will get the gloss.

I am very happy with the painting and the gloss here and there actually looks good. This painting was a huge learning experience related to the character of the materials.

Family on Shore

This painting was mostly from imagination. I had a very tough time deciding on the colour of the sky, water and the complete paintng itself. The actual painting looks good from a distance about 4 feet. I will probably not go for paintings without any reference, I guess I need much more pratice to do that.

Camel Racing

I wanted to make a series on Rajasthan and this is the first in the list. I later decided to make a series on seascapes before getting back to this. I will post the seascape paintings later.

Experimenting the Style

I did these paintings as a study during my class at

West Hartford Art League under Mr.Brain Cobalt.

I am glad I took this class as it opened a door for experimenting.

I had no idea such painting styles existed.

Impressionist Ruins.

A study on Impressionism. I loved this style. No pressures on colour mixing.Mostly out of the tube colours and concentration only on the value. I will definitely trying more and larger paintings in this style.

Pointillist Shepherd

Study on pointillism. I submitted for a student show at the art league. As usual I did not take a good photograph. Well before I started this I was very sure of not getting till the end of the painting as it needed a lot of patience. A painting with just different colours of dots put together? I was sure I would not like it. I was wrong it was quite interesting.

This was a still life setting during the class.

Lost in Thought - Expressionism

I did this as a study for my painting class.I had a very tough time giving a gloomy look to this painting. I am not sure how far I am successful. Initially I thought of working on the woman towards more realist but later changed my mind to keep things vague. I could not take a proper picture of the painting though.

Had to do a portrait of a family member during a portrait painting class.My husband had a tough time working on his laptop without moving. I took more than an hour.Well I guess the outcome was not bad as I was never good with portraits.

Pencil sketch

Source- A photograph from banaras.

I came across this photograph while browsing for Banaras photos. The picture looked very interesting but I could not draw the front view of the boats properly. I wanted to send this picture for any beginner shows but too late to correct the boats as I have already applied the final fixative.

The above photograph is lighter than its original sketch.

IT- BHU (Through my Husband's Memories)

I always wanted to get BHU onto paper or canvas for my husband. I have never seen someone love his/her school so much. I do not have much practise with paintings so decided to go for pencils and try how my idea would workout and if it comes out well then onto canvas some day in future.

I am glad I did not do it for his B-Day.I know the sketch was a disaster. There is something which is really going very wrong with the way I handle colour pencils and I have no clue about it.
This sketch kind of got me onto the ground. I was getting over confident and kind of getting obsessed with the thought that my work has to be good when it comes to pencils. This sketch was kind of an eye opener.

Conclusion a bad drawing and a bad photograph. The sketch is not as bad as this photo.

Lone Tree

My first sketch of 2008- Inspired from Chetana's blog(naacamera.blogspot.com)

When I was looking at Chetana's blog(my senior), there was something in this photograph. The moment I saw it I wanted to try this with colour pencils. I had a very tough time blending the colours. The final outcome was not very smooth but I have not explored colour pencils much and have to learn and practice a lot.

I tried hard to take a good picture of the sketch but this was the best shot I could get.

As a painting this one did not come out that well but I am not that good at drawing people with a pencil also and with a brush I am happy with the way it turned out...I was too scared to attempt to change it also....so not going to touch this again.

I wanted to give a good gift to my sister for her baby shower.She is very sentimental....so dared to try this even though I knew I need loads of practise related to people...but this was for my sister so did not have the burden of the painting should be great...so why not give it a try.

Water Fall

My first oil painting completely on my own.I was just browsing through net and one day I saw a demo on waterfalls in youtube.I wanted to try it and as I already had couple of photos saved

I chose this.I am not 100% satisfied with the outcome but I was sceptical to change...I dint want to spoil it...anyways this is how it looks.

Gossip at the river bank

This sketch is very important to me as it is my first sketch with my own idea. I took a number of photographs and paintings as a source with some imagination too.I had the idea and started searching for the appropriate source. This is my first sketch which is not a straight copy from others paintings or photographs.

Inspired From Natalia Pierandrei's art work

I completed these drawings in engineering final year(2003).I wanted to make a diary for a friend of mine as a birthday gift.I never tried in colours till then and was not interested in making a diary with pencil drawings.I was not sure of the idea as I am very bad at imagination(i mean to draw on my own). I confirmed the idea when I was introduced to Natalia Pierandrei's art work by Reethi.I thank Satya for scanning the pictures as I dint make a copy then.This experiance gave me confidence that I could try something in colours too.I tried everything that was at hand to draw these...colour pencils,pens,crayons and sketch pens. It's been a long time I did these sketches and I am glad that there is an improvement in the sketches I do now.

My Best Sketch till date

Every one at home was making fun of me when I started this,as I was doing it on an A4 size paper and the post card had too many details(specially ammavaru on both sides) to clearly show on a small printout paper . The result surprised every one at home including me.I did this for a friend of mine and was even planning to give him the original but gave him a copy as I was not sure if I would be able to draw anything like this one.

Its my first sketch on a 18/24 size paper(Thanks to my sister who insisted on buying it-I was not sure if I would be able to draw on a paper of that size).I started this on the request of Indu .She made a copy of this on a 24/36 sheet and arranged it beautifully for pooja.

I wanted to try a sketch with colour pencils . My first shoping in US was for colour pencils.I had very high expectations on the pencils but was not aware that they were general colour pencils. Initial look was a disaster, so later tried out others tools like sketch pens, pens and crayons to get this look.

Over confidence- I overlooked my sister's point that the Lingam was not straight while I was doing the outline itself...later it was too late to make any changes.

The facial expressions dint come out well and wanted to show this at Parashakthi temple Detroit(my sister is a volunteer there).I wanted to re do it after reaching my sister's place but unfortunately lost few of my best sketches in the airport and this was one of them.

Shiridi Sai-Satya Sai

I am not good at potraits and you can make it out seeing Satya Sai baba. I combined two photographs to sketch this one.

Proportions of lord Siva are not correct, but I din't realise it until my sister pointed it out. I like the way the cow turned out.

This was my first sketch where I tried shading.I did the outline and kept it aside for a month as I was not sure about how to shade.This is a perfect example: I generally don't have patience to work on a sketch after a certain time. I worked hard on this but dint have the patience to draw the mouse properly.
